Election Day the kids were out of school for the second day and we were all getting pretty restless. It was a gray and drizzly day, but around 1pm Merrilee and I made the impulsive decision to drive to Carter Mountain Apple Orchard and pick apples. The orchard is in Charlottesville, about an hour away but we didn't mind the drive. The foliage was breathtaking! It has been quite a spectacular fall. This photo doesn't even begin to do it justice, but I had to try.
All the kids worked hard and each filled their bag with apples. Aidan and Joseph mostly threw the ones on the ground, but at least it kept them happy. When I got up to the register, I found that we had picked 80 lbs. of apples! (Winesap variety) At $1 a pound it was far more than I planned to spend! A hard lesson.
Merrilee and I had about 115 lbs. of apples between the 2 of us so we spent the next few days canning apple pie filling and making dried apples. I also canned my Halloween pumpkins and dried the seeds. We have since made apple crisp and have almost polished off all the dried apples. I'm very pleased on how it all turned out. Now I'm a little burned out on preserving and ready to move on! I have plenty more projects waiting to be done.
