A Memorial Day Weekend to Remember

This past week has been a busy one with Rob being gone all week at a med mal CLE class and the school year rapidly coming to an end. We all missed him but Aidan seemed to suffer the most. He really loves his Daddy. The second Rob got home on Friday night, we were packing the van for the father/son campout--poor Aidan missed out on that one too and that really hurt. Maybe next year, Dan! While the boys were gone Kirstin and I watched movies and played games. I told Kirstin she didn't have to go to bed until she wanted to, but at 2 AM I was starting to regret that decision! She's a pretty fun chick.

The really big news of the weekend is that Caleb broke his arm trying out the zip line! We were having the elders over and I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when Rob came in with Caleb, crying and holding his arm. He had long sleeves on so I couldn't see the damage but Rob assured me that the injury required the ER so I immediately put him in the car and took him to the hospital while Rob agreed to stay behind and finish dinner preparations. He took care of the kids and fed the elders and arranged for child care and someone to help him give Caleb a blessing. (He's quite a guy isn't he?) Meanwhile, when the triage nurse finally got to Caleb, she pulled his sleeve up and his little arm looked so deformed I nearly passed out. They x-rayed it and found he had snapped both the ulna and radius just above the wrist. Poor Caleb was in so much pain but hardly cried. He was so brave. They had to put him under general anesthesia so they could set the bones and put a splint on his arm. The ortho surgeon did a marvelous job and Caleb is doing quite well. He won't be going to school for a few days but he's not too sad because he's going to finally see all those Star Wars movies his friends have been talking about! The nicest thing that came out of this whole experience was that Kirstin discovered that maybe Caleb is not so annoying after all! True to her nature, she has been an excellent nurse to Caleb.

We couldn't have had more perfect weather for Memorial Day so we decided to have our good friends the Macqueens over for a picnic at our place. We really enjoyed their company, but I'm not sure how I feel about Aidan preferring "Mommy Merrilee" to me! I should probably just enjoy the break. I can't close this post without mentioning the gratitude I have for both my grandfathers and my brother in law (and their families) for their sacrifices in serving our country. I am humbled when I think of the millions that have served and sacrificed in the course of our nation's history.
